May 24th to 29th, 2013 three planets in our solar system are visible close together low in the West after sunset. This is also called a conjunction.
On the evening of May 25th, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury came together and I was able to take some photos of this event. In the days leading up to and after their close encounter in our evening sky, they could be seen moving closer together and then parting ways once again.
This is a fixed tripod shot taken with an unmodified Canon 350XT and Sigma 17-70mm lens. I found a nice view of the western horizon that evening along the border of City of Waterloo and Wilmot Township in the Region of Waterloo, Ontario.

My story began more than 40 years ago looking up at the Moon with a small collapsible telescope my Father had. Encouraged by my parents, who bought me my very own telescope, a 4.5″ reflector, I began to explore the night sky from my family home backyard. Today I do astrophotography from my home in Kitchener, Ontario and also with remote telescopes located in New Mexico and Australia. Some of my images have won awards and have been featured online and in magazines.
